What Is Breast Cancer?

All cancers are named 1 of 2 ways: where they originate or the type of cells that formed the cancer, tumor or growth. Breast cancer is named for where it began forming i.e. the mammary glands of the breast. It can be purely genetic and form in young people that other cancers may not. While it is also associated with females breast cancer can also occur in males.

What Can Breast Cancer Be Misdiagnosed As?

Research shows that there are 2 main conditions that are frequently confused with breast cancer. These are:

Fibrocystic Breast Disease: Breast cancer is often inaccurately diagnosed as fibrocystic breast disease. Fibrocystic breast disease, also simply called fibrocystic breasts, causes the breast tissue to feel rope-like or lumpy. Fibrocystic breast disease is generally benign. However, it can cause tenderness and pain in the affected area.

Mastitis: Mastitis is an inflammatory condition resulting in inflammation of the affected breast. Both mastitis and inflammatory breast cancer do not exhibit a breast lump. The symptoms of these conditions involve redness and inflammation which may cause tenderness, rigidity and irritation of the breast.

As with other cancer cases getting an accurate patient history, and ordering the proper diagnostic tests, are essential to getting a proper and timely breast cancer diagnosis. A mammogram is the most common diagnostic tool used for determining breast cancer. In addition to a mammogram other diagnostic aides in breast cancer cases are a breast exam (both self exams at home and by your doctor), breast tissue ultrasound, breast cell biopsy and a breast MRI.

Failure to correctly interpret these results, or not reviewing them at all, can result in your cancer going undiagnosed and or advancing to the next stage (there are 4 cancer stages) which limits treatment options and decreases survival risk. If your breast cancer was not correctly diagnosed you may qualify for benefits and financial compensation per Pennsylvania medical negligence laws.
